HHSC Code of Conduct

FOR COMPETITORS

Sailors participating in HHSC events or representing the Club at away regattas agree at all times to comply with the following code of behaviour:

1.    Respect the rights, dignity and worth of fellow competitors, coaches, officials and spectators.
2.    Abide by the rules and respect decisions of the race committee, umpires, judges and protest committee.
3.    Be a good sport.  Recognise and congratulate good achievements by other competitors.  Take time to learn the rules, and abide by them
4.    Treat other competitors as you would like to be treated.
5.    Cooperate with your coach, club/teammates and opponents.  Without them, there would be no competition.
6.    Sail for fun and not just to please parents and coaches.
7.    Control your disappointment.  Verbal abuse of officials or other competitors, deliberately distracting or provoking other sailors are unacceptable.
8.    Refrain from any form of physical, sexual or emotional harassment. Comments relating to gender or race are unacceptable
9.    Work equally hard for yourself and your crew.

FOR PARENTS

Parents attending or spectating at sailing events are expected at all times to comply with the following code of behaviour:

1.    Encourage children to participate, but if they are unwilling do not force them.
2.    Focus on the child’s effort and performance rather than the overall outcome of the race/series.  Assist with setting realistic goals related to the child’s ability rather than an emphasis on winning.
3.    Teach children that an honest effort is as important as a victory, so that the result of every race is accepted without disappointment.
4.    Remember that children sail for their enjoyment, not yours.
5.    Encourage children always to compete according to the rules.
6.    Never ridicule or shout at a child for making a mistake or failing to win.
7.    Recognise all good achievements by all competitors.  Remember that children learn by example.
8.    Refrain from any form of physical, sexual or emotional harassment. Comments relating to gender or race are unacceptable
9.    Respect the decisions of officials and teach children to do likewise.  If you disagree with an official, raise the issue through appropriate channels and do not question their integrity in public. Remember most officials are volunteers.
10.    Show appreciation of coaches, officials and administrators, without whom your child could not participate.
