Hunters Hill Sailing Club Newsletter 4 December 2024

Welcome to December and full steam into summer sailing, with many members soon to put the year’s training to the test at various regattas – fair winds to all!

From the President

It’s regatta season for many sailors at the Little Club that Can. From Zac Howell in Argentina for the 2024 Optimist World Championship, to others off to Brisbane for the Queensland State Championship or Sail Sydney at Woollahra Sailing Club – it’s all happening across various classes! I hope everyone has fun, regardless of the boat, the race, or the stage of learning you’re at. Represent yourself, your family, your crew, and the club with pride. Be competitive but respect others – on and off the water.

Remember to send photos and videos for use on the club social media accounts to photos@huntershillsailingclub.org.au or the club photos Whatsapp group – please join here

Learn2Sail

The Try Sailing session scheduled for last Saturday was cancelled due to low registration numbers – a reminder to all members to be proactive and creative in helping to promote our Try Sailing and Learn2Sail programs to your community networks!

This is more critical than ever given increasing competition from other clubs currently ramping up promotion of their beginner programs.

Please ask your local school to include this flyer in the weekly newsletter or share the link in the community interest groups to which you belong through social media such as Facebook.

Optimist Fleet

Summer is here, with some of the season’s main events happening over the next six weeks, including Summer Optimist Regatta Sydney (SORS) at Georges River 16’ Sailing Club. SORS is part of the NSW Optimist Grand Prix and is the ranking event for state team selection for the national Team Racing Championship.

The Musto Australian Optimist Championship incorporating the Australian Optimist Team Racing Championship will be held on 10-17 January at the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron on racing waters very similar to those experienced at Georges River.

One of our sailors Victoria Lin lent design assistance to the team at Shoreside Clothing for the Team NSW polo shirt and cap that sailors will wear during the opening ceremony at Nationals!

The Optimist fleet will be following Zac Howell’s progress at the 2024 Optimist World Championship.

Spotlight on safety

The club has QR codes on the briefing board and beside the defibrillator and first aid kit for reporting hazards (anything you spot that could be a potential risk), and incidents (when a risky situation occurs, with or without injury). It is critical to report incidents, for instructors especially, as we can all learn from them!
