HHSC Newsletter - 31 October 2026

From the President

The arrival of warmer weather and reliable breezes has brought fantastic energy to our waters. It is inspiring to see our newest juniors finding their feet while our senior fleets sharpen their edge ahead of the January nationals.

Our racing teams represented HHSC with distinction last weekend. From our Optimists navigating tricky conditions in Canberra to the ILCAs contending on Lake Macquarie, the determination across all divisions was exceptional—including a standout performance by our very own ILCA Grand Master, Jason Borner.

Ashore, our volunteer spirit remains our greatest asset. A dedicated team—notably Jefferson, Lee, Jason, and Ben—has been working hard to prepare our decommissioned start boat for sale. We are nearing the finish line, but an extra pair of hands would make all the difference if you have an hour or two to spare.

Conditions are prime. Let’s make the most of them and see you on the water.

HHSC Optimists Take on the ACT Championship

What a weekend in Canberra! The ACT Championship at Lake Burley Griffin delivered just about everything, from light and shifty conditions on Day 1 to spectacular 15–25 knots on Day 2, with a peak gust recorded at 32 knots. Amazing sailing conditions, and definitely a weekend the kids won’t forget!

HHSC had a strong team of 14 Optimist sailors on the water: 10 Opens, one Intermediate and three Greenies.

The standout was Luca, who won five out of seven races to take home the Open Championship title for the second year in a row. 🐐 An outstanding performance! πŸ₯‡

There were plenty of other highlights across the team. Tom sailed consistently to finish a solid fourth, missing third on countback. Zac had a great Day 1, while Ellery celebrated his first ever race win in Intermediate on Day 1. Great milestones and results across the fleet!

A special mention to Miles, competing in his first Open regatta. He made the most of the experience and showed plenty of determination, especially on the final day in the big breeze, making it through the 25-knot conditions without a single capsize. Something to be proud of! πŸ‘

And then there was Emma, who gave her brand new, shiny boat its baptism of fire, straight out of the box and straight into racing! No time to break it in gently. πŸ˜…

Our three Greenies, Harry, Matilda and Edith, also enjoyed some fun racing and valuable experience on the water.

From testing light air tactics to the big breeze, the team had it all this weekend. And once again, Canberra proved to be a fantastic destination for both sailors and parents!

Well done to all our sailors and a big thank you to the families and supporters who made the weekend possible. πŸ‘

What’s Next? πŸ—“οΈ

Next stop: WSC for the Traveller’s Trophy on Sunday 8 November!

This is a local regatta, so we expect to see all our HHSC Optimist squad out in force!

Our goal is to build a strong, active racing squad across Open/Interm/Green, with sailors regularly participating in club racing and attending as many state regattas as possible. Training is important, but putting those skills into practice on the start line is where the real progress happens.

We love seeing our sailors enjoying their time on the water, but we want to see them racing too! Regular regatta participation is an important part of their development as sailors and as a team.

So, let’s get the HHSC squad together at WSC and show up in numbers. See you on the start line! β›΅

IlCA Flotilla at SPASC πŸ“Έ D.Malorey

Another mighty turn out from HHSC at last weekends Coasts. Of the 58 boats attending, we can claim 8 affiliated to us with boats in the ILCA4, 6 and 7 fleets. Our ILCA4 fleet was the largest of all the clubs attending.

The winds were recorded as 12-18 knots from the ENE and WNW for Saturday and Sunday respectively, however it was gusty all weekend with the coach boat recording gusts up to 28 knots on the Sunday.  The entire fleet was working hard and experiencing some fast sailing on the trapezoidal courses.

There is an official write-up here - https://laser.asn.au/?p=6912 - with some images and a link to the full results,

HHSC sailors had a huge presence in the awards presentation taking out first place overall and 1st female in both the ILCA4 and ILCA6 fleets along with a number of other 1st and placings in age categories. All our sailors and their achievements are listed below. Well done to you all.
